26 Dec The navel of the city of Florence
Florence’s places are characterized by the presence of numerous columns. All these columns have a historical importance but it is one of it that has a great importance of the others. It’s the column which raises itself on the Republic’s square and which establishes Florence’s real center, that us, the Florentines, consider as the navel of the city. The reason of this central role goes back to the origins of the city when, in 59 before JC., the veterans of the armies of Jules Cesar returned victorious from the battles in Gaul and founded the colony of Florentia. Once the fallen Roman Empire, the function of the square changed repeatedly but the column continued to keep its position and its importance by crossing the centuries. At the top of this one, we observe a feminine face celebrating the Allegory of the Abundance. She dominates the space and observes the Florentine life which swarms and the passage of the tourists who liven up every day the city.
