In quiet monasteries

Even in the Middle Ages time Florence streets and squares were as hectic and noisy as now, but inside the monasteries it was the opposite: only silence, meditation and prayer. Mysticism was emphasized by pictures such as frescoes of the crucifixion and of the last supper.
